Man killed after jumping in front of train

A MAN was killed by a train in the third incident of its kind near a Midland railway station within the past year.

The man is believed to have jumped in front of the passenger locomotive as it approached Bilbrook station on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line. His body was found soon afterwards.

Police cordoned off the scene for an investigation and services were suspended for more than an hour.

The tragedy happened just before 9 am on Saturday as the train was on its way to Aberystwyth in Wales.

The train driver was afterwards rested from his duties.

The death is the third of its kind on the same stretch of track near the station since March last year, the two previous casualties being women - one from Pendeford, Wolverhampton, and the other from Walsall.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said a full investigation had been launched into the latest tragedy.

Anyone with information concerning the incident should phone British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 where all calls will be treated in confidence.
