Work starts on red route scheme

A red route

A MAIN road into Wolverhampton will be designated as the city's first "red route" this spring.

Work has begun to introduce the measure - which aims to reduce congestion and improve safety - on the A449 Stafford Road between the M54 and the ring road.

The "red route", which comes into force on March 12, comprises various measures to improve traffic flow, including waiting restrictions and dedicated loading areas for delivery vehicles.

Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council's regeneration and enterprise spokesman, said: "This red route will address the problem of delays caused by inconsiderate and illegal parking and improve road safety.

"The order is for 12 months but at the end of this period we will look at the benefits achieved. This will include listening to the views of local people before considering whether it should be made permanent."
