Popping out for sum shopping

PLEASE come and be a teacher!

Commuters and shoppers in Birmingham were invited to see if their maths skills added up to a career in teaching during a special exhibition in the city centre.

Passers-by were encouraged to solve a giant, three-dimensional equation in Victoria Square as part of a campaign by the Training and Development Agency for Schools to find more maths teachers.

Students from Holyhead School, in Handsworth, challenged people to solve 2 x X+ 2 = X + 4 (answer: X=2) and then explain how they did it.

The event promoted a teaching careers fair at Thinktank on March 2 and 3.
