Schools lottery ruled out

CITY education chiefs today rejected Government proposals to use a lottery system to allocate places at popular schools.

The new ballot system adopted in Brighton to stop middle-class families dominating the best schools will not be copied here, Birmingham leaders said.

Under the proposals, when Brighton schools are oversubscribed an "electronic ballot" will be used to allocate places.

The scheme was also dismissed by the leader of Solihull Council, which has a similar admissions programme to Birmingham based on giving preference to families living nearest to schools.

Both councils were today sending out letters to parents confirming whether they have been successful in their choice of schools for this coming September.
