Couple killed by wave

A COUPLE killed after a wave whipped up by high winds swept them off a harbour wall on the Cornish coast are believed to be from the Midlands.

The man and woman, thought to be from the Wolverhampton area, were walking along the pier at Mullion Cove when they were swept out to sea in gale force winds on Sunday.

An RNLI lifeboat, a Royal Navy rescue helicopter and a coastguard rescue team were alerted.

A BBC television crew from Norwich, filming in Mullion, managed to get a lifebelt to the man, but the rope snapped.

The bodies of the man and woman were recovered by helicopter and they were later pronounced dead at Trelisk Hospital.

A Falmouth Coastguard spokesman said: "The sea was extremely rough at the time. There were gale force winds, heavy rain and huge waves. The harbour is quite exposed to rough weather."
