Citizens unite to press for a referendum

A LEADING city campaign group is set to back the Mail's referendum petition for an elected mayor tonight.

Birmingham Citizens, a coalition of inner-city faith and community groups, will adopt the petition as one of its two key political campaigns this year.

Some 700 delegates are expected to pack into the Great Hall and the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston where they will pledge their support.

They will each offer to collect up to 50 names in a bid to legally force a referendum on how Birmingham is run.

The Citizens, who include Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and community groups, are also set to call for the hidden army of long term resident - failed asylum seekers to be given a chance to earn the right to stay in the UK under their Strangers to Citizens campaign.
