Second retirement village planned for city

PLANS for Birmingham's second retirement village have been announced, just days after work began on the first.

The proposed Egghill Village scheme will create up to 180 properties around a "village centre" with social and leisure facilities in Longbridge.

Pensioners living there will have a village hall, restaurant, bar, arts and crafts room and a greenhouse right on their doorstep.

Vulnerable residents will benefit from 24-hour support.

Work has already begun on a similar scheme in Oscott.

The village is part of Birmingham City Council's £50m housing regeneration scheme for the Egghill estate.

John Innes, cabinet member for housing, said: "This is wonderful news for the south-west of the city and provides further provision for extra care.

"This shows our commitment to improving services to meet the needs of local older residents."
