Work starts on new fire HQ

WORK has begun on West Midlands Fire Service's new headquarters in Birmingham.

The brigade is leaving its historic Lancaster Circus site and moving to a new building in Vauxhall Road, Nechells.

The chief fire officer, Frank Sheehan, and chairman of the fire authority, Coun David Hinton, took part in the "turf breaking" ceremony to officially mark the start of work.

Headquarters staff will continue to work at Lancaster Circus until the new building is completed by autumn 2008.
