Blaze hits historic pub

TWENTY drinkers and staff were evacuated from an historic pub after the roof caught fire.

Faulty wiring was thought to have sparked the blaze at the 17th-century Ye Olde Saracen's Head in Balsall Street, Balsall Common, near Solihull, at 5pm yesterday.

Staff used a fire escape leading to the roof to fight the flames with water before firefighters arrived.

Watch commander Dave Bromley said the blaze almost destroyed the roof.
