Tribute to VC winner planned

Bill Savage VC

A VICTORIA Cross war hero from the Midlands who took part in one of the most daring raids of World War Two is set to have a street named after him in his home town.

Able Seaman Bill Savage, just 29 when he died, was posthumously awarded the highest British medal for valour.

He was awarded the VC for his part in the brazen Commando-led attack on the German-occupied French port of St Nazaire in 1942.

Able Seaman Savage, from Smethwick, was one of 169 men killed in the raid. He remained at his post firing a 'pom pom' gun with no protective shield in a bid to stave off the enemy until he was fatally wounded.

Sandwell Council leader Coun Bill Thomas wants his name immortalised by naming a street after him on the housing development on the site of the former Mitchells and Butlers Brewery.

Coun Thomas said it would be particularly apt since the sailor worked at the brewery before he went off to war.
