100 years of motor history goes on show

MORE than 100 years of motoring history will be celebrated in a new Midland exhibition.

The display, opening on May 26 at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire, will feature many items not seen in public before.

Visitors will see pictures and films tracing the history of the motor industry from the 1890s, from the days when it was dominated by household names such as Austin, Morris, Rootes and Wolseley to now, where brands like BMW, Honda, Nissan and Toyota are to the fore.

Highlights will include an interactive display showing the lifestyles and earnings of factory workers and another covering British cars of the 1970s.

Entitled Making British Cars, the exhibition forms part of the £1 million Road Ahead project at Gaydon, which has been funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

A mezzanine floor is also currently being built, which will display some iconic Midland-built cars such as the Mini, Morris Minor and Land Rover.
