Cleaned-up look for the Black Diana

The new-look bust of Princess Diana.

A BLACK Country sculptor who unveiled his controversial 'Black Diana' statue seven years ago has scrubbed the dark veneer from his memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales.

The £10,000 black granite figure was the centrepiece of the Funeral Show at the NEC - an exhibition of burial art - in May 2000.

A ballot revealed the public would like to see the statue put on display at the New Art Gallery in Walsall, but local councillors threw out that bid in April 2001.

But stonemason Andrew Walsh, whose life-sized tribute was branded "creepy and demonic" by critics, removed the veneer last week in a bid to win public approval for the revamped statue.

The sanded-down figure is now on display outside Andrew Walsh Funerals in Bloxwich, Walsall.
