Scooter fans go the eggstra mile

A CONVOY of kind-hearted scooter enthusiasts were out in force to deliver Easter eggs to youngsters at Heartlands Hospital.

Around 20 "mods" hit the road to take dozens of eggs to patients at the Small Heath hospital yesterday.

In scenes reminiscent of Brighton in the 1960s, members of the Midland Scooters club made their way from Asda car park and along the Small Heath Highway.

The annual event has taken place for last four years and Chris Morrell, play specialist at Heartlands Hospital, said the children were delighted.

"It was absolutely brilliant. They have been looking forward to it all week," she said.

"We took children down in beds and wheelchairs to see the scooters and they got to sit on them. It was great therapy for them.

"Every child received an Easter egg, it was wonderful.

"I want to say a big thank you from all the children and staff to everyone who came along."

Alex Osborne, of Midland Scooters, said the Easter egg delivery was one of the highlights for members.

"We all ride classic scooters from the 60s or modern Vespas and Lambrettas," he said.

"There were scooters there that are 40-years-old.

"I got into the original mod scene in the 60s but our members just like the music and the whole scene.

"We starting donating Easter egg four years ago. It's a great opportunity to get together and do something positive for the community."
