Hall looks to future celebrating its illustrious past

The 167-year-old Town Hall in Birmingham has been closed to the public for six years

A MAJOR two-week festival to celebrate the re-opening of historic Birmingham Town Hall will be launched later this month.

The event, to be held in October, has been given the title Celebrating The Past, Pioneering The Future.

The festival will be officially launched at the Town Hall on April 19 when musicians Soweto Kinch and Andy Hamilton will be guests at a special presentation.

There will also be an opportunity to look around the hall, which has undergone a £35 million refurbishment funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Birmingham City Council and the European Regional Development Fund.

The Town Hall was handed back to the city council last monthmarch following its major facelift which included repairing stonework and removing false ceilings.

The building, which had provided more than 160 years service, has remained closed since 1996.

It has staged performances from icons ranging from The Beatles to Elgar.
