Teenager killed in collision with lorry

A TEENAGE boy was killed and his nine-year-old brother seriously injured when their bicycle crashed into a lorry.

The 14-year-old was pedalling the bicycle in Hay Mills with his younger brother clinging on to him when they careered into a flat bed lorry, police said.

The teenager, from Hay Mills, suffered multiple injuries and was declared dead soon after the accident yesterday afternoon. The nine-year-old sustained serious arm injuries and was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

The tragedy happened in Deakins Road shortly before 5pm. Police said the bicycle was ridden down Geraldine Road and into Deakins Road when the accident happened.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said the 48-year-old lorry driver, from Birmingham, was not injured but was severely shaken by the accident.

"This is a real tragedy, especially as it has happened during the holidays," she said. "Police liaison officers are working with the family as it is a big shock for them. We have had no witnesses yet, so we are desperate to hear from anyone who does have information on the accident."

The brothers were riding a pedal cycle down Geraldine Road towards Deakins Road when they were in collision with a Vauxhall Movano Lorry, which was travelling on Deakins Road towards Stechford.

The tragedy comes as the boys were enjoying their Easter break playing around the local streets.

Witnesses can call the road policing unit at Stechford on 0845 113 5000.
