Oil spill sparks traffic chaos

A SPILLAGE of 1,000 litres of oil caused traffic chaos and prompted a chemical alert in the Midlands.

The alarm was raised at just before 8pm yesterday in Station Road, Old Hill.

Five fire crews and two specialist units were drafted in to the scene.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said three drums containing non-toxic oil used in food production came off an articulated lorry and landed in the roadway.

He added: "The three drums each contained 1,000 litres of the substance and one of them split open and its contents spilled onto the road and a quantity leaked down the drain."

The road was closed off by police while firefighters helped soak up the oil using sand.
