Health minister gets a medical display

Education Secretary Alan Johnson watches Tresor Kalensa, aged 15, help emergency medical technician Mark Caulkin at Harborne Hill School.

EDUCATION Secretary Alan Johnson had a health check at a pioneering centre in a Birmingham school which is bringing the medical profession to life for the next generation.

The Health Tec Centre at Harborne Hill School has already won a national award for its unique way of showing students in practical terms what career paths they could take in the health service.

"It's stunning," said the Cabinet minister as he watched pupils tackle a mock emergency with the help of a real-life paramedic.

"It takes your breath away."

Mr Johnson's tests revealed a 98 per cent level of oxygen in his blood and a healthy heart rate of 54 beats a minute.

The centre is the first one of its kind in the country to introduce pupils to all that the NHS can offer.
