Mailbox bridge to make a 10ft move

The Mailbox bridge, which is to be moved.

A BIRMINGHAM walkway has closed for engineering works which will see it being moved a short distance to make way for a new development.

The Mailbox bridge will be repositioned to accommodate the plush office development The Cube.

The bridge, which runs from the Node tower through to Brindleyplace, will be moved ten feet closer to The Mailbox after the Node tower is demolished.

The bridge was closed for two days this week and will be closed from next Monday to Friday.

A realigned landing point will be built for the bridge and a new starting point on the towpath. The new bridge will meet the balcony at the top of the Mailbox at Level 7, adjacent to Bar Epernay.

Built by The Mailbox in 2000 to allow pedestrians to cross the Birmingham and Worcester canal and travel up to Brindleyplace, the bridge is used by hundreds of people a day.

The works are being carried out by the Birmingham Development Company.

During the operation, pedestrians will need to take the Holliday Passage which runs by Red Peppers, cross over Holliday Street and go straight up Bridge Street, which leads to Broad Street.

Alternatively, they can turn left off Bridge Street at the James Brindley pub and go over the bridge to access the canal towpath.
