Man dies in car smash

THE driver of a car has died and another is fighting for his life after a smash on a Birmingham road.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident after a paramedic stumbled upon the scene of the crash in Egghill Lane, Frankley.

A 52-year-old man from Rubery, who has not yet been identified, was confirmed dead at the scene.

A man in his 20s from Birmingham, who was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital, was today described as being in a critical but stable condition with severe head and leg injuries.

Four further patients, including a six-year-old boy who had suffered head injuries, were taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. It is not believed their injuries are life threatening.

A West Mercia Police spokeswoman said the crash had involved three cars, a white Mercedes travelling towards Frankley, as well as a green Cherokee jeep and a red Vauxhall Vectra, travelling in the opposite direction, around 5.30pm on Saturday.

"Three cars were involved and one was on its roof with a patient trapped and a number of people injured," she said.

"Unfortunately, the driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the Vectra suffered serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition in hospital."

In a seperate smash a teenager was left fighting for his life after his scooter collided with a 4x4 on a Midland road.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash on Droitwich Road at its junction with Berrow Hill Lane, near Feckenham, in Worcestershire, at around 9.15pm yesterday.

The driver of the scooter, a 19-year-old man, suffered severe head injuries and was taken to the Alexandra Hospital, in Redditch.
