City crash victim is named

THE victim of a road smash was today been named as a 52-year-old Birmingham man.

Stephen Wassall, of Charnwood Close, Rubery, died after his white Mercedes car, which he was driving along Egghill Lane towards Frankley, was in a head-on smash with a green Cherokee jeep and a red Vauxhall Vectra.

The driver of the Vectra, a man in his 20s from Birmingham, who was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital with severe leg injuries, was today described as being in a stable condition.

A woman in her 20s, who was a front seat passenger in the Vectra, sustained minor injuries, and a six-year-old boy, who was a rear seat passenger in the car, was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

He was later transferred to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester with head injuries, which are not life-threatening.

Police today appealed for information about the crash, which happened at around 5.30pm on Saturday.

PC Mark Rowley, of West Mercia Police, said: "This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with Mr Wassall's family and friends, as well as with those who were injured.

"The smallest detail can make a real difference to this type of enquiry."

Anyone with information should call police on 08457 444888.
