Jasper takes the baton for blood

BRUMMIES have been educated in the power of giving at the first Birmingham Donor Day.

Athletes from the Transplant Games, X Factor stars 4Sure, comedian Jasper Carrott and Birmingham's Lord Mayor, Coun Mike Sharpe, were at Victoria Square to encourage giving blood and signing up to the organ donation register.

The National Blood Service desperately needs more donors to save victims from emergencies like car crashes to cancer and transplant patients.

Jayne Harmon, from the National Blood Service, said: "By raising awareness about donation we hope to encourage people to become donors.

"Just one donor can mean the difference between life and death for someone."

To become a blood donor, you need to be aged between 17 and 59, weigh over 7st 12lb (50kg) and be in good health. Appoint- ments on 0845 7 711 711.
