Longbridge: The shape of things to come

The former West Works.

THIS is how the former MG Rover site may look if plans for new businesses and housing succeed.

The artist impressions reveal a vision for the future of the area. People living in Longbridge met Yvette Cooper, the Government's Minister for Planning and Housing, during her visit to the former MG Rover site.

Ms Cooper discussed plans to create 10,000 jobs and 1,000 homes at the site of the historic car company, which collapsed in April 2005.

The new plan includes a 25 hectare employment site aimed at attracting national or international businesses and a hi-tech business park.

Also proposed are a new community area with shops, offices, space for homes and a public square.

The plan also covers environmental improvements and a better public transport system, including a revamped Longbridge railway station.

The proposals were considered by a residents' forum, residents, community groups and stakeholder organisations. The city council received about 1,200 written responses.

The bid was approved by the city council cabinet and it is expected to be adopted in September.

During Tuesday's visit the minister met with the Tenant Board of Northfield With Local Control, Northfield MP Richard Burden and representatives from developers St Modwen and Advantage West Midlands.

Resident Frank Virgilio said: "Six thousand people lost their jobs but these plans are going to create work not just for Longbridge but hopefully for Northfield.

"It's going to generate better housing for people as well as improve job prospects. The area is now becoming a desirable place, not only to live in, but to work."
