Former Lord Mayor loses seat

FORMER Lord Mayor Mike Nangle, one of the most popular figures in the council chamber, lost his seat in one of the few local election shocks.

The genial Irishman ended his 23 years in council chamber after a surprise defeat in his Hodge Hill ward.

And it appears he lost enough votes to independent anti-Tesco campaigner Roger Gordon, to hand victory to the Liberal Democrats.

Mr Nangle had also campaigned against the development of a Tesco superstore on council playing fields near the Fox and Goose shopping centre.

But the Liberal Democrats, whose Gwyn Neilly, took the seat by 116 votes, were part of the ruling council administration which has allowed the Tesco scheme to go through.

It was only two years ago that Mike Nangle became the city's first ever Irish Lord Mayor.

Labour Leader Sir Albert Bore said: "I am sorry to see a man who has served the city so well and for so long to be defeated in these circumstances."
