Man airlifted to hospital after Expressway crash

A MAN was airlifted to hospital this afternoon after a road smash closed parts of the Aston Expressway in Birmingham.

The crash is thought to have involved a van, a motorbike and a car.

Emergency services were alerted today by a flurry of calls from eye-witnesses to the collision shortly after 12.10pm.

A paramedic motorcyclist was first on the scene, closely followed by two ambulances, an Incident Officer and a doctor.

The County Air Ambulance, from Strensham in Worcestershire, was also scrambled and the motorway into city was closed to allow the aircraft to land.

The collision was expected to cause delays for workers leaving early for the start of the Bank Holiday weekend as the A38 remained closed between Park Circus and Dartmouth Circus while police investigated the collision.

Ninety minutes after the collision, the Highways Agency said the out-of-city carriageway remained closed and only one lane of the into-city carriageway was open.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "Ambulance crews treated two motorcyclists.

"A woman in her 40s received serious multiple arm and leg injuries and was taken by land ambulance to Selly Oak Hospital. A man in his 40s was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital with serious lower leg injuries.

"The car driver in his 60s received minor injuries and was also taken to hospital."
