Scanning glitch mars counting

IT was very much a case of "as you were" at Dudley with little change in the balance of power.

After last night's results, Conservatives stood on 38, with Labour on 28 and five Lib Dems.

There was a recount at Kingswinford North and Wall Heath where two seats were up for grabs.

And because of a problem with a computer system scanning postal votes, the count at Pedmore and Stourbridge East ward had to be postponed until this afternoon.

Dudley Council Tory leader Coun David Caunt said there was a problem with 500 postal votes.

"The postal votes cannot be verified using the new computer system, which was brought in to try to prevent postal vote fraud," he said.

But he was confident that when the Pedmore count went ahead, the party would retain its seat there.

"I would have liked to have made some more gains but I am very satisfied with the results," he added.
