MP in praise of relief road

Richard Burden

A NEW £20 million relief road in Birmingham has been commended for cutting traffic congestion.

The Northfield by-pass was praised by local MP Richard Burden who had campaigned for the road to relieve congestion and help regenerate the town centre.

He was speaking prior to Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander officially opening the road today.

Drivers have been able to use the Northfield by-pass since it opened last month after a year of frustrating road works.

Mr Burden said: "The road is already dramatically cutting congestion.

"But the real task now is to use the opportunity to renew Northfield as a place to shop and as the natural centre of our community.

"Some great work is already being done by the Northfield Town Centre Partnership.

"Big improvements have been made to the old Grosvenor Centre, now called Northfield Shopping.

"It is vital the city council and other agencies put the investment in to improve the environment along the high street."
