Beer may be reprieved

AN historic Black Country beer may live on as a seasonal brew after real ale lovers gathered a 1,000-name petition to save it from extinction.

Hanson's Mild, which had been made for more than 150 years, was axed by Wolverhampton-based brewer Marston's earlier this year due to poor sales.

But the Campaign for Real Ale has now received an assurance that the mild will be retained by Marston's as a candidate for its guest beer programme.

In a letter to CAMRA, Marston's chief executive Ralph Findlay said: "It is clear that Hanson's Mild Ale has many fans - even if there are not enough to continue permanent distribution - and has a place in the history of mild ale in the Black Country."
