Phil's landed a rubbish job

Workers Tony Clark, left, and Nathan Morrison meet Land Phil.

LAND Phil, the walking rubbish heap, is the latest recruit in the fight to go green and protect the environment in Birmingham.

Phil was an eye-catching inhabitant of an environmental village built in Victoria Square as part of World Environment Day.

Visitors were able to discuss recycling and composting and ways of minimising waste with Birmingham City Council's recycling team.

They were also able to take along old clothes and shoes for a Rumble Jumble, which they could swap for something else, buy recycled goods, or pause for a cup of Fair Trade coffee.

People could view one of the council's greener, low- emission recycling trucks, and browse stalls by organisations dedicated to the environment.

The event aimed to highlight the importance of recycling, litter and waste reduction to help the city to be a greener and cleaner place. The council achieved a 20 per cent recycling rate for the past 12 months, a year ahead of schedule.
