That sounds like 280 years' singing!

CBSO conductor Sakari Oramo, left, with long serving members of the orchestra.

MEMBERS of the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus who have been on song for 280 years between them have been rewarded with long-service awards.

They were congratulated by Sakari Oramo, music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, at Symphony Hall.

Four received gold awards for 30 years service.

Phil Rawle, one of the founder members in 1972, has performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony 48 times and has taken part in all 89 Christmas concerts.

"It's a privilege being part of a choir that performs at the highest level," he said.

"The chorus has been part of my life for more than 30 years and as long as I can keep passing the re-auditions I'll continue!"

Mr Orami also honoured Medina Cole, Valerie Matthews, Lesley Nickell, Kath Campbell, Hazel Hughes, Margaret Wilson, Paul Bodley, Paul Sheldon and Mike Smith.
