Tower block alert after blaze in flat

MORE than 30 firefighters were called to tackle a blaze in a tower block flat in Erdington.

They were alerted when smoke started billowing from the fifth floor flat of Kentmere Tower, on the Lindhurst Estate, shortly after 10pm last night.

Firefighters are treating the incident as suspicious.

Families were told to stay in their homes as fire crews attempted to douse the flames which threatened to spread into the communal areas of the flats.

Erdington fire station crew commander Steve Horsley said: "This was a very severe fire and flat fires can be particularly hazardous for us."

Police are investigating the incident.
