Soldier was 'finest of his generation'

Sean Dolan

A SOLDIER originally from the West Midlands who was killed in Afghanistan at the weekend was the finest soldier of his generation, the Ministry of Defence has said.

Captain Sean Dolan from 1st Battalion, The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters, died while on an operation with US and Afghan troops in Helmand province on Saturday.

The 40-year-old soldier was observing Taliban fighters from a vantage point when he was killed by a mortar round.

He was named by the Ministry of Defence but details of his death and his lengthy career have only now been released.

The father-of-one was honoured in the 1990s for helping in the arrest of terrorist suspects in Northern Ireland and had recently been awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.
