You bet we had a good day at the races!

Runners romp home at in the Birmingham Mail's day at the races at Stratford.

THE Birmingham Mail's Family Race Day proved a real favourite with thousands of fun seekers - despite gloomy skies.

Early downpours had threatened to put a damper on the big event at Stratford Racecourse.

But by the start of the first race the rain had ceased and the clouds had rolled back sufficiently to provide the delighted crowds with an enjoyable day.

Apart from the thrills and spills of the home straight, families were kept amused with a host of free entertainment and good food and drink.

There was a variety of fun for children with a big top circus, a bouncy castle, face-painting and numerous stalls and sideshows.

Beverley Franklin, of Castle Bromwich, who was with husband Lee, and five-year-old daughter Meghan was making her second visit to the event.

"We came last year. It is a shame the weather is not better but we are still having a lovely day out," she said.

Jennie Eardley, from Stratford, who was with her daughter Nicola, aged 13, and 11-year-old son Matthew, said: "We have been to the Family Day out loads of times. It is a great day out. It is exciting and there is lots to do."

Punters cheer on their favourites at the Birmingham Mail's day at the races in Stratford.

Debra Groom, from Kings Heath, picked the winner of the first race.

Debra, who was with her husband Michael, 12-year-old son Daniel, and daughter Sophie, aged 10, said: "The children have been round the stalls and have really enjoyed it.

Michael said: "This is the third year we have been here. It is a good family day out especially if you win."

Some customers were enjoying their first visit to the event but by no means their last.

Among them were Ted Roberts, his wife Barbara and their 14-month old grandson, Ryan, from Leamington.

"It's a brilliant event. We shall certainly come again," said Ted.

"It's just a nice day out and gives us time to spend with Ryan."

No stranger to the event was Penny Parry-Williams, of Desborough, in Northamptonshire.

"I go racing as often as I can. This is a lovely day out whatever the weather."

Jan Gibson, from Stratford, was with her husband, Rob, sons Ross and Rob Junior and his girlfriend, Rebecca Fitzgeorge.

"We come regularly and enjoy the thrill," she said.
