Lorry in bridge smash

The damaged lorry after it struck the bridge in West Bromwich Street, Oldbury.

A LORRY driver had a lucky escape after his vehicle hit a railway bridge.

The collision happened in West Bromwich Street, Oldbury, at about 11am yesterday.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said that the top of the lorry's trailer collided with the underside of the bridge.

"The trailer was carrying beds and part of the load spilled out onto the road.

"It was badly damaged but thankfully the cab of the lorry was relatively unscathed.

"The driver, a man in his 50s, was complaining of hip and leg pain from the vehicle coming to a sudden stop.

"He was checked out at the scene by ambulance staff but fortunately escaped with bruising and did not require hospital treatment.

"Police had to close the road while emergency teams worked at the scene."
