Coun Ken Hardeman

TRIBUTES continued to pour in today to one of Birmingham's most respected senior councillors who died following an illness.

Coun Ken Hardeman, cabinet member for regeneration, died early yesterday morning in City Hospital, where he had been treated since last month for breathing problems, aged 72.

Yesterday his political colleagues described his death as a great loss, praising his contribution to Birmingham's transformation.

Coun Mike Whitby, leader of the city council, said: "Ken was one of the great men of Birmingham. He was loved and respected by all political parties."

Former paratrooper and mechanical engineer Coun Hardeman was also a leading restaurateur in the city for many years and ran Celebrity restaurant in Broad Street.

Coun Hardeman leaves a widow Shirley, children and grandchildren. No date has yet been set for the funeral.
