Family escape in arson drama

A MAN, a woman and five children were led to safety by firefighters after an arson attack on their Midland maisonette.

The man was in the living room of the three-storey property in Wolverhampton and his partner and children aged two to 13 were asleep in bed when a petrol-like substance was poured through the letter box and set alight.

Alerted by a phone call, he put the blaze out before firefighters arrived.

Crews woke up the children and led them to safety as a precaution following the blaze, which was started at the property in Ellerton Walk, Park Village, about 11pm yesterday.

Police were today investigating the incident, in which the hall carpet was destroyed and the area heavily smoke-logged.

Fire crews were fitting the maisonette with smoke alarms and visiting neighbours to ensure their properties were also protected.

Watch Commander Paul Gaymer of Fallings Park fire station said today: "The fire could have been a lot worse than it was."
