MG Rover site gets new jobs

THE first jobs marking the dawn of a new era for Longbridge are finally in place - just over two years after 6,500 car workers were thrown on the dole.

Midland IT minnow Co-operative Web, a worker co-operative, is the first tenant to move into the 45,000 sq ft Innovation Centre on Longbridge Technology Park.

The launch of the five-strong IT company brings the first non car-making posts to a site where developers St Modwen hope to provide 10,000 jobs in a prosperous new era for Longbridge.

The Innovation Centre is the initial phase of the transformation of the sprawling former car factory complex, providing a range of serviced suites for new and growing technology-based businesses.

The tiny IT outfit, which supplies web programming solutions for a wide range of clients including local authorities, charities and large companies, decided to relocate from Walsall to cut down on commuting for their staff.

Ed Russell, who heads the firm, said: "It's a perfect location and the modern facilities available fit in with our aspirations."

Andrea Fullard, Innovation Centre manager, said: "There is an encouraging number of individuals and companies expressing interest in occupying the serviced accommodation in the building. Several businesses are already moving in."
