Demo by mental unit protesters

FAMILIES outraged at plans to open a secure mental unit on their doorsteps in Birmingham were staging another protest today.

Members of the Safer Communities Group want health bosses to scrap plans for the centre in Yardley Green Road, Bordesley Green, which will house 85 convicted criminals.

The protesters claim the all-male unit will put families at risk of attack and create fear.

They are angry that despite high profile demonstrations by hundreds of people during the last year, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust is sticking to its plans.

A spokesman from the Safer Communities Group said: "The community of Bordesley Green says 'no' to these mad plans. We will stand firm."

The trust insists the medium secure unit would provide a much needed facility.

It said: "Currently these men are being treated miles away from their families and friends, due to the lack of services.

"The local NHS organisations involved in the development are committed to engagement with local communities where they can continue to shape the development of the site and share any concerns they may have."

Protesters were voicing their concerns at a mental health trust board meeting today outside the Uffculme Learning Centre, in Queensbridge Road, Moseley, Birmingham.
