Tell us about naval hero

MUSEUM staff have issued an appeal for information on a Walsall war hero.

Walsall Museum, in Lichfield Street, wants to find out more about John Carless, who was awarded a Victoria Cross for his bravery manning a gun under fire on HMS Caledon in the First World War.

The Walsall man, whose bust stands outside the museum, is set to be the subject of an exhibition later this year.

The display will to coincide with the formal return of the Royal Ensign that flew on the ship as Carless was carrying out his famous deeds.

Jennifer Thomson, Walsall Council community history curator, said: "We are very of proud of Carless and we are looking to create a small exhibition to do him proud.

"We'd like to hear from people who may know a little more about him and his life.

"For example, we understand that the ensign hung at an ex-serviceman's club in Bloxwich for many years. We'd like to hear from people who may remember it there.

"We'd also be interested to hear from ex-servicemen who may have served in the Royal Navy."

Artefacts are also being sought to help with the exhibition. To make a contribution contact Walsall Museum on 01922 654315.
