Workman recovers after impaling horror

A WORKER who survived after being impaled by a metal rod on a Birmingham building site is recovering from his ordeal after being rescued by fire crews and paramedics.

They spent almost an hour using hand-held saws to free the 47-year-old man who remained conscious throughout the drama on the top floor of a three-storey site being constructed by the Sir Robert McAlpine company in Church Street.

Roads were closed to allow an air ambulance to land but the man was taken to Selly Oak Hospital by ambulance.

The man, who has not been named, underwent extensive surgery to remove part of the metal rod from his body.

Ladywood fire station crew commander Steve Harris, who was involved in the rescue operation, said the rod entered the man's left leg, went through his body and came out by his right shoulder.

An inquiry is being carried out by Birmingham's Health and Safety Executive.
