Man found unconscious in city street

A YOUNG man was fighting for his life in hospital today after being found unconscious in a Birmingham street.

The 25-year-old was discovered at the junction of Bordesley Green East and Church Road, Stechford, shortly after midnight yesterday.

Police said he had suffered injuries to the back of his head. He is in a "critical but stable condition" in hospital.

Detectives have not yet been able to find out if he was injured in an attack, had fallen or was knocked over.

Det Chief Insp Steve Graham, from Stechford police, said they were treating the incident as suspicious until they could establish how the man was injured.

"This is why we need the public's help to determine exactly what happened," he said.

Detectives spent yesterday making house-to-house enquiries near to the scene of the incident. Police said they were keen to trace witnesses, particularly anyone seeing a man riding a bicycle at the road junction late on Tuesday evening.
