Country festival is axed

THIS year's Sheldon Countryside Festival has been cancelled due to the continuing bad weather.

The decision to axe the day-long festival was taken after forecast of further rain this weekend.

The event was due to take pace at Sheldon Country Park on Sunday July 29 but council chiefs said the "extreme weather" meant it would not longer be safe.

Organisers are now hoping to stage the event in September.

And a spokeswoman for Birmingham City Council, which organised the festival, said: "Due to extreme weather a decision has been taken, in conjunction with the community, to postpone Sheldon Countryside Festival."

"The event has been postponed due to the ground conditions, coupled with the prospect of further bad weather.

"A new date, likely to be in September, will be considered."

It is the second major event to be cancelled due to bad weather this week.

The annual Eid Mela at Cannon Hill park has postponed for similar reasons and will now take place on August 16.
