Mail editor and MP debate elected mayor

CITY MP John Hemming and Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson last night debated the petition for an elected mayor at a public meeting.

The pair were guest speakers at the Chestnuts Neighbourhood Forum in Garretts Green.

Mr Hemming (Lib Dem, Yardley) criticised elected mayors, saying he thought they "concentrated too much power in one individual".

Mr Dyson explained the background to the newspaper's petition. He said: "We're calling for a referendum to let the people of Birmingham decide for themselves, rather than leave it to politicians."

Forum committee member Sukhbir Degun said: "The Birmingham Mail maintained an independent stance while Mr Hemming forcefully put his arguments against, which led to a slanted debate."
