Fish saved as floodwaters recede

THE Environment Agency has saved hundreds of fish left stranded in receding floodwater - four summers after a similar operation launched on the same river in response to drought conditions.

Pictures taken on Wednesday show officers from the agency rescuing fish from a field beside the River Teme, close to where the Battle of Worcester took place in 1651.

Hundreds of fish were returned to the Teme, including bream, roach, dace and perch, 24 hours after large numbers of bream and carp were returned to the Severn from pools on Worcester Racecourse.

Other archive pictures taken along the Teme at Leintwardine, Herefordshire, in August 2003 show fish being rescued due to sinking water levels caused by a lack of rainfall.
