Flood hit cricket ground stumped for season

WORCESTERSHIRE County Cricket Club has officially confirmed that no more matches will played at its flood-hit home ground this season.

The county estimates that it has lost around £450,000 due to the first summer floods to swamp New Road since 1969.

Worcestershire's chief executive, Mark Newton, said: "Now the flood waters have receded, it is clear the ground has been devastated and there is no chance that we can recover the playing area this summer."

The second of this summer's floods was the second deepest of 136 recorded at the ground since 1899, Mr Newton added.

"In contrast to the earlier flood this summer, the water stayed with us for nine days and because of its severity has deposited a thick layer of mud and slurry over the whole area.

"This in turn has killed much of the grass so we must now turn our attention to repairing the damage in time for the 2008 season.

"This is the last thing we wanted to do but there is no practical alternative."
