Probe over police cell incident

POLICE watchdogs have launched an investigation after a man tried to harm himself while in a police cell.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said it was looking into the incident which happened last month.

It followed the arrest of a 36-year-old Selly Oak man on July 17 on suspicion of assault.

When the man was taken into police custody he was declared fit to be detained but later he was transferred to hospital with breathing difficulties.

He returned to the police station later that morning but police officers who checked on him found the man "attempting to self harm".

The matter was referred to the IPCC and it has now been determined that a managed investigation should take place.
