THE Birmingham Mail has launched an award in memory of one of its former employees who lost a courageous battle with cancer.

Geoff Fielding, a sub-editor and page planner who had worked at the company for more than 20 years, lost his battle with the disease aged just 60.

Well-respected among his colleagues for his flair and eye for detail, the Mail decided to create the Geoff Fielding Memorial Trophy to honour editorial staff who share Geoff's qualities and make an outstanding contribution to the paper.

The inaugural winner was today named as the Mail's Chief Reporter Emma Cullwick.

"I'm thrilled to have won this award and proud to be the first person to receive this honour in Geoff's memory," she said.

The Mail's Editor Steve Dyson said: "Geoff is sadly missed by his colleagues and this is their way of honouring his memory while also encouraging and celebrating journalistic excellence."
