Chariots festival a racing sucess

Worshippers celebrate in the Rathayatra festival in Birmingham city centre.

MUSIC, singing and lavishly decorated chariots all made up Birmingham's city centre Rathayatra Festival on Sunday.

The event, which is a major celebration in the Hare Krishna faith, is one of the oldest in the world and this is the seventh time it has been held in Birmingham.

Huge chariots - which are meant to represent the carriages of gods Jaganneth, Babhadra and Subhadra - were carried from Victoria Square through the centre of Birmingham and then back to the square for celebrations.

Among the attractions at the event were drama shows, free food and a village of markets.

Nitai Charan Das, organiser and Birmingham Temple president, said: "Rathayatra is a festival that brings everyone together to remember and reflect on our relationship with God."
