Cops raid metal theft hotspots

POLICE launched raids across the Black Country today as part of a massive crackdown on unscrupulous scrap dealers and known metal theft hot-spots.

Some of the swoops took place on homes early this morning as part of the on-going Operation Steel. Officers were also blitzing sites throughout the day in Tipton, West Bromwich, Wolverhampton, Willenhall, Brownhills and Dudley.

Some were issuing warrants and others are reminding dealers that by accepting stolen metals they are committing a criminal offence.

Operation Steel was launched on August 3 to target the increasing problem of metal theft in the area. Since than a total of 42 arrests have been made. Instances of metal theft, particularly involving valuable copper and lead, have significantly increased over the last six months in line with the rising price of scrap metal.
