Tanker tyre explosion leads to m-way chaos

MOTORISTS on the M42 faced delays today after a tyre on a fuel tanker burst into flames, raising fears of an explosion.

Firefighters from Solihull and Bickenhill were alerted just after 8.20am and used hose reels to put out the blaze.

They prevented it from spreading to the main tanker and it did not affect its load.

The fire, which happened near junction six on the Northbound carriageway of the M42, was out by 9.30am. No-one was hurt. The motorway was partially closed by police causing 30 minute delays during the rush hour.

West Midlands Fire Service spokesman Jeremy Sharpe said: "The load the lorry was carrying wasn't affected in any way."
