Fundraising to the fore with Johnny

Johnny Briggs

HOUSEWIVES' favourite Johnny Briggs is preparing to swing into action to support cancer sufferers across the region.

The actor, who played Mike Baldwin in Coronation Street, is getting showbiz pals to help him too by holding a Celebrity Golf Classic at The Belfry, near Sutton Coldfield.

Regular golfers will get the chance to play alongside 20 celebrities including Jasper Carrott, Bev Bevan, comedian Lee Wilson, Shel Macrae of the Fortunes and cricketer Gladstone Small.

All cash raised from the event on September 11 will go towards Macmillan Cancer Support.

Johnny said he was looking forward to teeing off on the day alongside fellow golfing celebrities.

"It is sure to be a great day," said Johnny.

"Each team will be partnered with a celebrity and get to play on the world-famous Brabazon Course.

"Cancer affects us all and by getting involved in this event, it will help make a significant difference."

Former soap star Johnny was getting some shots in before the big day with Kevin Blair, director of the UK Golf Show at Whittlebury Park, and Nick Tolley, managing director of Astral Digital, whose companies are sponsoring the golf classic.

Steve Dourass, spokesman for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "Through the support of our sponsors, all the money raised on the day from team entry and other fund-raising activity, this event will help Macmillan improve the lives of people living with cancer."

The charity provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support and pushing for better cancer care.
